SERIES DESCRIPTION
Christmas can be filled with all sorts of emotions. Some people easily experience the joy of the season. Some rest in the hope that God is making all things new. But others struggle to find peace due to life’s circumstances. With all that’s going on this time of year, we thought it’d be great to go back to the basics and simply celebrate Christmas.
The truth is Jesus is the best gift God ever gave. Jesus was proof that God loves us and we can trust God no matter what. Because of Jesus, it’s possible for us to have a relationship with God that will last forever. As we remember the Christmas story, we take time to celebrate the greatest gift the world has ever known and rediscover joy and hope and peace as we rest in the unconditional love of God.
December Curriculum:
Week One (December 6)
High Hopes
Today’s Bible Story: High Hopes (Jesus is Promised) • Isaiah 9:6
Today’s Key Question: What are you hoping for?
Today’s Bottom Line: We can have hope because God keeps His promises.
Monthly Memory Verse: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:11 (NIrV)
Monthly Life App: Christmas—Celebrating Jesus, God’s greatest gift
Basic Truth: I can trust God no matter what.
Key Question: What are you hoping for? Christmas is a time of year that is filled with hopeful anticipation. We look forward to spending time with our families. We hope for a certain gift under the Christmas tree. Or maybe we hope there will be a gift under the tree. With all that might seem strange about Christmas in 2020, it’s important for kids to have the chance to process their feelings. We pray this week will not only give them a chance to share their hopes but also remind them that they can put their hope in God, who they can trust no matter what.
We kick off Christmas with one of them most hopeful passages in the Old Testament. In Isaiah 9:6, we read, A child will be born to us. A son will be given to us. He will rule over us. And he will be called Wonderful Adviser and Mighty God. He will also be called Father Who Lives Forever and Prince Who Brings Peace, (NIrV). As God’s people were about to head into exile, God delivered hope through a promise. Someday, this will all be over—a King would come who would make all things new. Christmas celebrates the hope that God sent Jesus to fulfill that promise and rescue creation once and for all.
Bottom Line: We can have hope because God keeps His promises. Throughout the Bible, we see time and again how God followed through on what He promised His people. Knowing that God has kept His promises in the past, gives us hope that God will continue keeping His promises in the future. In a world of uncertainty, we pray that kids discover the hope that through Jesus, God is making all things new.

Joyful, Joyful
Today’s Bible Story: Joyful, Joyful (Gabriel Appears to Mary) • Luke 1:26-56
Today’s Key Question: What are your plans for Christmas?
Today’s Bottom Line: You can have joy because God has a plan for you.
Key Question: What are your plans for Christmas? December can be a busy time of year for families. We start with this simple question to get kids thinking about how we can respond when life doesn’t go according to our plans. Mary’s own plans for her life changed when the angel appeared to her and told her she’d be having a baby. She responded with joy. We pray that kids will discover how they can find joy, no matter what is happening because God’s plans are always better than our own.
In week two, we head to Luke 1:26-56 and discover more about when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce that she would be Jesus’ mother. This must have come as quite a surprise. After all, Mary wasn’t married yet, and she had a different plan for her life. Gabriel reminded her that nothing is impossible with God. She could have been overwhelmed by this startling news, but she chose to respond with a song of joy.
Bottom Line: You can have joy because God has a plan for you. As we look over the past year, most of us could say that our plans changed a bit. Maybe we missed a vacation. Maybe we had to work from home. Maybe we even got sick. When our plans are thrown up in the air, we can still find joy. Nothing takes God by surprise. We can trust that God has an ultimate plan for our lives. We pray that all kids would discover the joy that comes from believing in Jesus and God’s plan for us.

How He Loves
Today’s Bible Story: How He Loves (Jesus is Born) • Luke 2:1-7
Today’s Key Question: What are you giving this Christmas?
Today’s Bottom Line: God loved us so much that He gave us a Savior.
Key Question: What are you giving this Christmas? Christmas is all about God’s love for us. God loved us so much that He gave us His One and Only Son. God’s gift to us should compel us to give to others. We hope that as preteens answer this question, they start to see the ways they can show their love for others by giving of themselves. We can give gifts, but we can also give our time and attention to help others know how much we love them and how God loves them too!
As we kick off the week of Christmas, we head to Luke 2:1-7 and discover more about when Jesus was born. From a human perspective, this whole situation must have seemed crazy to Mary and Joseph. Not only was Mary expecting the baby who would save the world, but now she and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem for the census. When they arrive, there’s no room for them to stay except for the place they keep the animals. As hectic as this moment was, this is just how God wanted Jesus to enter the world.
Bottom Line: God loved us so much that He gave us a Savior. Looking back over the stories included in the Bible, time and again it comes back to God’s love for His creation. Right from the start, God wanted to have a relationship with us. Even when we messed that up with our sin, God continued to love and make a way to rescue us. Jesus is proof that God loves us unconditionally.

Peace on Earth
Today’s Bible Story: Peace on Earth (Shepherds Visit) • Luke 2:8-20
Today’s Key Question: What does it mean to have peace?
Today’s Bottom Line: God’s peace is for everyone.
Key Question: What does it mean to have peace? When kids hear the word “peace” they might think it has something to do with not fighting or not going to war. However, as we finish up the Christmas story, we learn that peace can be an attitude we decide to practice. We pray that through this question and the discussions that follow, kids will understand that no matter what is happening in their lives or around the world they can have peace of heart and mind through Jesus.
We finish up the month in Luke 2:8-20. After Jesus was born, the first people to find out are some unassuming shepherds in a field minding their own business. The angle announced Jesus’ birth along with an angle choir that proclaimed God’s peace for everyone on earth. They rushed to see the baby for themselves. They were so excited that they spent the rest of the night telling everyone they could about Jesus.
Bottom Line: God’s peace is for everyone. When life seems out of our control, peace can be hard to find, especially at Christmastime. Yet Christmas is all about the coming of Jesus, the Savior, who offers God’s peace all people, everywhere. We pray that kids come to a new understanding of peace. We hope that this Christmas kids everywhere would come to know God’s love and believe that Jesus truly is the Savior of the world.
